Spiedie Contest

This is the event that started it all, a salute to marinated meat on skewers, the pride of Broome County! The Cooking contest was part of the Balloon Rally’s original conception: a spirited Cook-off of a local food and a balloon rally. Anyone can join the fun and competition, applications are available and you simply need an original Spiedie recipe to enter.

There are three classes of competition, and one to four categories within each class. An open class for the public and a celebrity class for local celebrities to compete with one another! The open class competes in five different categories: Poultry, Pork, Beef, Venison, and Lamb. There is also an award for best presentation.

Our host this year is Jim Ehmke from NewsChannel 34. We bring in local dignitaries to judge the open class and have our own esteemed Chef’s association to judge the other classes.

The fun starts at 1pm on Sunday and will be covered by local TV and Radio Stations. Don’t miss the fun. Forms are available on line or call Spiedie Fest for information (607-765-6604) and forms.

Volleyball Tournament

The 30th Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament

This year marks the 31st Annual Co-ed Beach Volleyball Tournament. The first volleyball court that was built in Broome County was constructed in Otsiningo Park (home of the Spiedie Fest/Balloon Rally) in 1983, through the cooperative efforts of the county parks department and the Binghamton Volleyball Club. A few years later, two courts were built in a different location, and then expanded to four courts. At this time, the Spiedie Fest/Balloon Rally was looking to expand and include a volleyball tournament, and with the help of the club members it was a success and grew from year to year. Through this tournament, volleyball has expanded throughout the county to where there are now over a dozen sand courts and many leagues.

The Volleyball Tournaments will be held beginning Saturday morning, August 3, 2019 and on Sunday morning, August 4, 2019 at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. This year’s format will be as follows: Saturday will be a “Competitive 4’s Co-ed” team format. Sunday will be a “Recreational 6 player Co-ed” team format. New this year will be an instructional tournament on Saturday, August 3rd. This will be for age 18 and under and still be co-ed format. We would like to introduce young players to the sport and provide them with basic instruction. Instruction will also be available on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon or evening inside the park (TBD).

If you like the sand, sun and playing volleyball, then get your team together and sign up. It does not matter what level that you play as we have both competitive and recreational levels. With enough teams registered, we will even break into Gold and Silver divisions so that you get more playing time and more prizes. Volleyball T-shirts and other giveaways will be given to each team captain upon registration the morning of the tournament to distribute to his or her team members. More details on the tournament as well as tournament rules and details on the parking will be sent to you after your team has registered and paid. All profits go to a variety of local charities.

Once in the park, you can enjoy the great variety of food, fun, music & entertainment when you are not playing and after the tournament. See the main website for everything that is available.  There truly is something for everyone.

Come and join the fun. It keeps getting bigger and better every year, so don’t delay and get your registration in early. It not only assures your team a spot in the tournament, but can also save you money with early entry.

The Safety Pad

Sponsored for 2018 by: Weis Markets

The Safety Pad is a child safety program developed by two educators from the Broome County area. The goal of the program is to provide a safe harbor for children to go if they feel lost or threatened. The Safety Pad has been associated with the Spiedie Fest for the last 11 years and we consider the program a vital part of every festival. We thank them for helping to keep our children safe.

At this year’s Spiedie Fest, the Safety Pad will have a tent at both entrances to the park as well as a location in the center of the park. Please review these locations with your children. We will also have a mobile Safety Pad that will travel throughout the park between pad locations. Our logo is a frog with a lily pad named Wolly Pog. Please familiarize your children with Wolly Pog so that they will recognize him when you arrive at the festival.

If you are bringing a child to the event please make sure you pick up and fill out an ID tag and a What My Child is Wearing form for your child. These are available at both entrances to the park. Volunteers from UHS will be handing out the tags & forms and will be happy to assist you in filling them out. THERE IS NO COST FOR THIS SERVICE.

If your child becomes separated from you at the festival, he/she should go to a Safety Pad location or the mobile unit- just remind them to look for Wolly Pog. Any child who is lost will be taken to the central location by a Safety Pad volunteer or security personnel. The child will be kept at the location until the person who filled out the ID card arrives. A security person will be present for reunification to verify ID.

If you become separated from your child, go to the nearest Safety Pad location. Security and all Safety pad locations will be immediately notified with a description of your child and the last place you saw him/her.

The Safety Pad is not just for children. Let the people you come with know that if you become separated, the center location is a great meeting place. We are at the event to help and to provide an extra layer of security for the young, the elderly, and everyone in between.

The Southern Tier Breastfeeding Coalition, a not for profit organization of area Lactation Consultants, health care professionals, and breast feeding advocates will host a “Nursing Mother’s Rest Area & Diaper Changing Station” again this year. Breast feeding information & support will be provided during all 3 days. Diapers have been donated by Toys R Us, UHS Hospital and Wal-Mart. Free bottled water will be available for breast feeding moms along with comfortable seating in a private setting. Come out and help us celebrate World Breast Feeding Week the theme of which is “Breastfeeding- Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies.”
